  2. WinDirUsage

  5. WinDirUsage is a shareware MS-Windows utility that provides
  6. a graphical display of disk space usage.  This is a
  7. convenient way to identify those directories which are the
  8. biggest disk space consumers.  WinDirUsage uses a pie chart
  9. format and permits the examination of any directory on any
  10. drive.
  11.  
  12. Getting Started
  13. ===============
  14.  
  15. WinDirUsage initially reads the drive it was executed on.
  16. So if you run WinDirUsage from a floppy disk or another
  17. drive which has no subdirectories, the pie chart will merely
  18. show a circle and 100% of the disk space used by the root
  19. directory.
  20.  
  21. WinDirUsage allows you to select any drive on your system.
  22. Click on the down arrow next to the pulldown menu in the
  23. upper left corner to see available drives.  When a drive
  24. has been selected, WinDirUsage will read the contents of
  25. the new drive.  
  26.  
  27. For a directory that has subdirectories, WinDirUsage will
  28. show a pie chart that has slices showing the size of each
  29. directory tree.  For a directory that has subdirectories,
  30. Windu will show a pie chart that has slices showing the
  31. size of each directory tree.  The list box also shows each
  32. directory, sorted in order of size, largest listed first.
  33. The smallest directories will not be shown in the pie chart
  34. but are shown in the list box.

  36. You can select a new directory to view in more detail by
  37. either selecting the new directory in the list box, or by
  38. clicking on the section in the pie chart.
  39.  
  40. When you select a new directory to view, two new entries
  41. will be added to the list box.  "Root directory", when
  42. selected, will cause WinDirUsage to redisplay the root
  43. directory of the current drive.  Selecting the "Parent
  44. directory" item will make WinDirUsage redisplay the contents
  45. of the directory one level up from the current directory.
  46.  
  47. The WinDirUsage window can be resized.  The pie chart and
  48. list box will expand to the new size of the window.  The
  49. window cannot be made smaller than its initial size.
  50.  
  51. Limitations
  52. ===========
  53.  
  54. WinDirUsage V1.0 has a few limitations that will be fixed
  55. in future updates:
  56.  
  57.     - WinDirUsage doesn't handle empty floppy drives.  If
  58.       you select a floppy drive to read there must be a
  59.       floppy disk in it.
  60.  
  61.     - WinDirUsage cannot display more than 50 directories.
  62.       This doesn't mean you can't have more than 50
  63.       directories on the entire drive, just that
  64.       WinDirUsage cannot show more that 50 directories in
  65.       the pie chart or list box.
  66.  
  67.     - WinDirUsage only has 30 colors for the pie chart
  68.       segments.  After 30 directories are displayed,
  69.       WinDirUsage will start using random colors.
  70.  
  71.     - WinDirUsage will always read the contents of the
  72.       drive whenever a disk or directory is selected,
  73.       even if that directory has already been read once.
  74.       Only registered users will receive a version of
  75.       WinDirUsage that has this limitation removed.
  76.  
  77.     - The mouse is required to use WinDirUsage, the
  78.       keyboard is not supported.
  79.  
  80.     - WinDirUsage has not been tested with Windows V3.0
  81.       or Windows NT.

  83. Registration
  84. ============

  86. WinDirUsage is shareware, which means it is not free.  If
  87. you find WinDirUsage useful, please send in the registration
  88. fee of $10 (U.S.).
  89.  
  90. Those who register of WinDirUsage will receive:
  91.  
  92.     - A registered copy of the most recent version of
  93.       WinDirUsage.  Only registered copies of WinDirUsage
  94.       will not always re-read the contents of the drive.
  95.  
  96.     - Notification of new versions of WinDirUsage and
  97.       low-cost upgrades.
  98.  
  99.     - Satisfaction from supporting the shareware concept
  100.

  116. Future
  117. ======

  119. New versions of WinDirUsage will be released over time,
  120. depending on demand and how quickly I can add new features.
  121. Some features planned or being considered include:

  123.     - eliminating the 50 directory limit
  124.     - more colors, color customization
  125.     - font customization
  126.     - remembering windows placement and dimensions
  127.     - file manager drag-and-drop support
  128.     - displaying the largest file in the directory
  129.     - showing the files in a directory
  130.     - on-line help
  131.     - keyboard support
